Archival history

On January 14, 1861, 15 Bergexpektanten founded the Verein für Berg- und Hüttenleute zu Berlin as a scientific association for the students of the Royal Mining Academy, which also had the promotion and preservation of mining culture at heart, as demonstrated in 1862 by the publication of the Liederbuch für Berg- und Hüttenleute together with the Breslauer Knappschaft (today's 11th edition). In 1875 the association changed its name to Berg- und Hüttenmännischer Verein zu Berlin. In 1909 the members were able to celebrate the inauguration of their own clubhouse in Englische Straße 16. In 1928 the Altherrenverband des Berg- und Hüttenmännischen Vereins (BuHV) zu Berlin was founded. In the course of the unification after the National Socialist seizure of power, the BuHV was integrated into the National Socialist German Student Union in 1935 as comradeship. In 1946 the association, now at the Technical University in Aachen, celebrated its new foundation. In 1951 he was given a permanent home with the inauguration of the Association House in Aachen, Ahornstraße. 1949 in Clausthal, in addition to the Aachen Association, the Academic Association for Mining and Metallurgical People was formed and 1954, at a historic location, the Association for Mining and Metallurgical People at the Technical University in Berlin-Charlottenburg. A Berlin clubhouse was inaugurated in Ruhleben, Wacholderweg 6-8, in 1959. These three active associations in Aachen, Berlin and Clausthal joined together on 19 September 1954 under the name Berg- und Hüttenmännischer Verein zu Aachen (Berlin, Clausthal) e. V., an association with a long tradition, to form the Altherrenschaft, which continued its efforts to research and conserve culture and history through the establishment of the Hans-Lohmann-Stiftung in 1961, which made it possible to hold seminars dedicated to this task. The general growth of correspondence on the one hand and the desire to save archival documents from destruction on the other, prompted the board of the association to look for a solution for their storage, especially as the handover of extensive files was difficult with every change of tasks in the board. In 1981 it was therefore decided to deposit the documents and memorabilia no longer required for the current tasks of the Executive Board in the mining archive. In the same year, a deposit agreement was concluded with the mining archives, documenting both the history and activities of the Altherrenverband and its activities in a variety of ways. There are among other things both the different editions of the song book of the BuHV available as well as the various editions of the association history, member lists (starting from 1911), annual reports and the newsletters. The association documents have been enriched by numerous gifts from widows of federal brothers or from federal brothers themselves.
