The portfolio comprises the bilateral treaties from the time of the German Reich 1871 to 1945 as well as individual older treaties to the extent that they remained valid after 1871. Some of them are still in force today, including the oldest of the Friendship, Trade and Shipping Treaties with Argentina of 19 September 1857, and some 2,000 treaties with some 3,500 individual documents (powers of attorney, treaty texts, ratification documents, supplementary protocols, registration certificates of the League of Nations, etc.). This also includes some of Prussia's treaties with other German states. There were no war or other losses to a greater extent in the treaties. The most serious cases are the German-Soviet treaties of 23 August and 28 September 1939 ("Hitler-Stalin Pact"). The original documents were destroyed by order at the end of the war and only survived on films made for Ribbentrop's office, which survived the war thanks to the efforts of a member of the Foreign Service.
