Archival history

The Landesarchiv preserves historical sources from Saarland dating back to the High Middle Ages. It makes them available to all those interested in history. But also all citizens have access who want to make private enquiries, for example in cadastral registers, notarial deeds and civil status registers. The State Archives take over important documents from all state authorities, courts and other public bodies in the Saarland which are no longer needed there for the ongoing work. It arranges and records them and makes them available to the authorities and - after expiry of certain deadlines - to all interested parties as new sources for use. The legal basis for our work is the Saarland Archives Act of 23 September 1992, which entered into force on 1 January 1993 (according to: Amtsblatt des Saarlandes 1992, p. 1094).
