History of the inventor: In 1884 the German Reich took over the protection of the Bremen merchant Franz Adolf Eduard Lüderitz by acquiring land; in 1885 the German administration was established; the German colonial society, founded in 1895, expanded the German sphere of influence; in 1915 the Schutztruppe surrendered to the armed forces of the South African Union and the German administration ended. Inventory description: Inventory history At the end of the 1930s, the Reichsarchiv took over the files of the Colonial Administration of D e u t s c h - S ü d w e s t a f r i k a, in some cases with considerable gaps in their transmission. After the relocation caused by the war, they were transferred to the Central State Archive in Potsdam in 1945. Here, the classification of the holdings into the central administration of Windhoek, the local administrations and the special administrations (justice, police, mining, railways) with their substructures, which had already been carried out in the Reich Archives, was preserved. The few volumes of files kept in the Federal Archives in Koblenz were assigned to the holdings after the reunification of Germany. Archive evaluation and processing In addition to the factual files of the most varied areas and administrative levels, the personnel files of the inspection of the state police as well as the railway administration and railway construction authorities form the most extensive groups of files with about 80 per cent of the transmission. The classification of the stock was carried out largely in accordance with the classification shown in the provisional finding aid, which was based on the registry scheme valid at the time. Only in a few individual cases were volumes assigned to a different classification. The order and titles of the volumes remained essentially unchanged. An index of persons, objects and places has been omitted, so that searches are only possible via the online version of this finding aid book. Brief description: The personnel office was founded in 1919. On 1 August 1998, it was merged with the Main Office to form the Main and Personnel Offices. His duties include all personnel matters of the municipal administration, in particular the recruitment, promotion and dismissal of municipal officials, employees and workers as well as the drafting of regulations and statutes in the field of personnel management. Scope: 457 units / 12 running meters Content: Files: Personnel policy, recruitment, training, promotion and dismissal of municipal staff, personnel welfare, tax, salary and insurance matters for staff, establishment plans of individual municipal offices. Focus: Third Reich and immediate post-war period Duration: 1866-1970 Notes on use: All files are blocked for a period of 30 years from the end of their term. The collection contains 26 personal documents with a special blocking period; some of the photographs contained in Nos. 403 and 397 are subject to copyright. Foreword: On 24 April 1919, the Municipal Colleges decided to establish a Personnel Office. This was to regulate the personnel and organisational affairs of municipal officials, sub-officials, workers and temporary staff, with the exception of the technical staff of hospitals and teachers, a task for which the Municipal Board of Education had previously been responsible. Dr. Frank Rechtsrat was appointed to the Management Board of the new office. Until 1933, the head of the personnel office was also head of the superordinate personnel department, which was connected with the gymnastics and sports department. With effect from 15 December 1933, the personnel office was separated from the personnel department, i.e. it was no longer managed directly by the personnel officer, but was subordinate to his area of responsibility. In June 1934, the salary department, which had until then been attached to the city maintenance, was attached to the personnel office. Further organisational changes were not made, so that the personnel office is still subordinate to the personnel and sports department. It is still responsible for all personnel matters of the city administration, especially for the employment, promotion and dismissal of all civil servants, employees and workers as well as for the preparation of regulations and statutes in the field of personnel. Most of the files listed in this volume were archived between 1965 and 1972. Most of them date back to the period between 1930 and 1950, while some of them date back to the 19th century. On the other hand, some files, in particular files relating to the establishment plan, date back to 1970. Personal files already handed over to the archives have not been included in the repertory since they are subject to a special blocking period and are generally not accessible for use. Since the files have been available to the users unlisted for several years and were quoted after the old signatures that were no longer applicable, a concordance is attached to the repertory. The stock comprises 457 units with a volume of 12 running metres. Brief description: In the second half of the 19th century, the municipal administration became increasingly differentiated. Little by little, individual municipal offices were established instead of the council deputations that had been active up to then. Portfolio 10 Depot A contains the files of the administrative offices (in contrast to the technical and building offices, which can be found in portfolio 11 Depot B). Scope: 5604 units/155 linear metres Content: files on land register, guardianship, municipal and commercial court, seizure, registry office; city relations with king and country; citizenship and emigration; municipal residents; military; statistics; celebrations and anniversaries; savings, insurance and provident funds; welfare and charity; fire protection; agriculture and forestry; public facilities and squares; trades and guilds; measure and weight; transport. In the Second World War they were lost: Files on the subjects of medicine, police, church, education, sport, art, science, sociability, financial management. Duration: 1504 - 1949 Instructions for use: The 10 Depot A portfolio was provided with new, simple signatures in 2006/2007. If you are looking for units of stock using the old signatures, please note the notes in the preface. Foreword: Notes on use The title recordings of the Depot A holdings correspond to the original titles of the files as they were noted on the file covers. Since the contents of the files were not checked when the holdings were recorded at the time, the contents of a file may therefore go beyond the title given or contain only general or indirect information on the subject given (e.g. only newspaper cuttings). When searching for relevant documents, it makes sense to carry out a broad search in terms of content. Similarly, when searching via classification, it should be noted that the respective assignment of the units to a classification point was originally very abstract and therefore different points should be considered. Occasionally, file covers do not contain any documents. As a rule, these are the units that do not have a scope. Exceptions are possible, however, as units were inadvertently omitted during surveying. The portfolio was renumbered in 2006/2007 and the units consecutively numbered (for details see next page "Further information on the portfolio"). The signatures 1281, 2560 to 2659, and 5233 were not assigned. A concordance of the old and new signatures can be found in the appendix to the inventory. Extensive units were divided for better manageability during the re-signing process. Divisions can be identified by the note "Continuation No. ..." or "Continuation of No. ...". Existing page numbers in the title were not adjusted. Numbers 5535-5602 follow number 2814 in the Findbuch, but it should be noted that in the case of the duration information, the entire time frame of the event or topic covered by the file was often given, or in the case of personal units (especially personal files and honorary citizen files) the life data of the person concerned and not the dates of the documents contained. Due to losses during the Second World War, about half of the original stock has been preserved. The collection comprises a total of 5530 units with a running time of 1504 to 1949, with a focus on the period from the beginning of the 19th century to the 1930s. When ordering units, you need the following information: 10 - Unit number If you refer to documents from the inventory, please attach a source reference according to this sample: City Archive Stuttgart - 10 - Number of Unit Further information on the holdings History of the authorities Around 1870 the central administrative and notarial registry of the city of Stuttgart was established, as well as a separate building registry for the building and building police department with the technical offices. The main tasks included the administration of the files, the keeping of diaries with entry of entries and exits, the supervision of appointments, the examination of the newspapers for articles concerning the city administration and the appropriate forwarding of these, as well as the preparation of various lists and the execution of other activities, often not belonging to the direct field of duties. The "administrative registry" and the "building registry" were merged into the "registry" office in 1912 by municipal council resolution. Some of the previous tasks were transferred to other departments of the city administration. Until the 1930s, however, the two registries were kept separate despite the merger. During the gradual departure of the municipal offices from the town hall, the older, no longer needed documents were left there and thus formed the main part of the two registries. History of the holdings In the course of the foundation of the Stuttgart City Archive on 01.10.1928, the existing archive holdings were divided into a historical archive and an administrative archive. The period 1820-1850 was defined as the approximate boundary between the two archives. The administrative archives contained above all the two large registries that had grown up at the head office: firstly, the administrative registry of the city, known in the archives as Depot A, and the building registry, known in the archives as Depot B. These holdings were supplemented in the archives after 1945 by mostly older documents that were thematically related but of a different origin (provenance). These additions were not marked in detail, a reconstruction of the holdings with regard to their origin (according to the provenance principle usual today) would be theoretically possible due to the original file covers which are usually still preserved. The holdings Depot A is thus a kind of thematic collection, in which however 90 documents correspond to the provenance principle. The duration of the collection covers the period from 1504 to 1949, with the focus ranging from the beginning of the 19th century to the middle of the 1930s. The preserved documents of the administrative registry of the city of Stuttgart (Depot A), which was established around 1870, together with the building registry (Depot B), represent the central file on the history of Stuttgart up to approx. 1935. The original registry signatures were largely retained in the archive until 2007 as archive signatures and the signature system for the documents thematically supplemented in the archive (see above) was extended accordingly if required. The depot A comprises the main groups already formed in the registry A. Justice Administration B. Regiminal Administration C. Police Administration D. Church system E. Education F. Care of sociability and entertainment G. Financial administration These are files of all areas of activity of the city administration. After the Second World War, Bruno Lenz ordered and recorded the files of the collection. For this purpose, the files were recorded in the order of the registry with the registry numbers specified in the file plan and a short title taken from the envelope of the respective Federation of Files, without, however, checking the contents of the file. A more detailed property and person index with details of the units was completed by Robert Starnitzki in 1969. This can be seen in the reading room of the city archive, but it refers to the old signatures. Processing of the holdings 2006/2007 The original finding aid book of the holdings Depot A with a total of 5530 units, available in typewritten form in 3 volumes, was transferred from September 2006 to February 2007 to the Augias 8 indexing software by Gerd Lange under the supervision of Sabine Schrag and Christina Wewer. Unusual abbreviations within the original find book were resolved. The following changes were made to the portfolio: New signatures: In preparation for the transfer of the find books, Volker Hauptfleisch resigned the old registry signatures, which continued to be used in the archive and consisted of upper and lower case letters and Roman and Arabic numerals, to simple, consecutive Arabic numerals in the order of the old signatures. In this way, the ordering of files is simplified for the user and confusion is avoided. The original signatures reflected the file plan and/or the table of contents (also classification or systematics) of the existence with its hierarchical and logical stages. Below these logical levels, the units were numbered consecutively in volumes (these were not bound volumes, but a further logical subdivision), and below them again in individual numbers, which represented the actual orderable units. Example: B I, 5, vol. 1 no. 1 The last level (no.) is occasionally divided into further units by lower-case letters. Through the re-signing the signature B I, 5, vol. 1, no. 1 became the signature no. 770. The old signature was noted at each unit. Due to an oversight during the re-signing, a gap of 100 numbers has arisen in the new numbering. The numbers 1281, 2560 to 2659 were not assigned. The number 2559 is therefore directly followed by the number 2660. The number 5233 was also not assigned. In some cases, signatures were assigned twice. Letters were attached to these signatures in order to identify them unambiguously (example: No. 1870 a and No. 1870 b). These letter annexes therefore do not refer to a substantive connection between the units. Units which were lost by other means only after the war losses were marked with the note "missing", partly with the date when the absence was discovered. They will continue to be listed in the search book in order to record which files were originally available. In a few cases, numbers were accidentally assigned to units that no longer existed. The units were also measured during the relocation and the circumference was given in cm (with a few exceptions). The units no. 5535-5602 (old signatures B IX, 1, vol. 1, no. 10a, reg. no. 1 to B IX, 1, vol. 1, no. 10a) already follow the number 2814 in the find book. Revised classification: The classification (table of contents, systematics) was adapted to the same extent as the signatures: instead of combinations of letters and numbers, a hierarchically structured system consisting of Arabic numerals was used. The classification point C VIII 3 d aa became, for example, 03.08.03.04.01. The classification or the table of contents of the original search book is based on the file plan of the administrative registry. In the appendix volume of the inventory all original classification points are contained, in the table of contents of the present finding aid book only those classification points were specified, to which documents exist. Documents that no longer existed were destroyed by the effects of war. The classification points, which are thus no longer occupied by units, are an important indication of what documents were once available in the city administration. Overall, more than half of the classification points are no longer documented. The classification point 01.03.03. Guardianship, inheritance and notary system was supplemented during the software input by further subitems, since in the original find book such a division was already given by headings. Explanation: Documents from the possession of the leader of the indigenous movement against the German colonial rule in today's Namibia, at that time German South West Africa, Hendrik Witbooi (ca. 1830-1905) had fallen into the hands of the Bremen merchant August Engelbert Wulff in 1895 in the course of military conflicts in Gibeon, Namibia. In 1935 he sold it to the then German Colonial and Overseas Museum. The documents were handed over to the National Archives of Windhoek in 1995 after reproductions had been made for the State Archives of Bremen and the Übersee-Museum. Content: Correspondence

Brief description: The "Armenbureau", renamed Armenamt in 1885, was founded in 1873. On April 1, 1910, the alms administration (responsible for the accounting and cashier's office of the local poor association as well as for the administration of the poor foundations and the municipal eating establishments), which had been independent until then, was attached to the poor people's office. From February 1919, the Armenamt was known as the "municipal welfare office". After the Reichsfürsorgeverordnung of 1 April 1924 came into force, a distinction was made between "superior welfare" and "welfare for the poor". For this purpose, the Youth Welfare Office, founded in 1921, was merged with the War Welfare Office to form the "Welfare Office". Its jurisdiction extended to the care of war-disabled persons and war survivors, pension recipients of disability and salaried employees' insurance, small and social pensioners as well as unemployed persons and minors in need of assistance. In the case of photo units, copyrights are often to be observed. Foreword: Introduction On January 1, 1873, the Reich Law on the Support Residence came into force in Württemberg. In the course of the resulting reorganization of the care of the poor, the "Armenbureau" was founded as an office for the urban poor. The tasks of this office, renamed "Armenamt" in March 1885, were laid down in the Statute for the Administration of Public Care for the Poor of 4 December 1873: 1. receiving applications for support, carrying out the necessary investigations, presenting the results of these investigations and the application to the Armdeputation, implementing the decisions of the Armdeputation. 2. to provide expert opinions on admission to state orphanages, institutions for the blind and deaf and dumb, as well as to the poor bath in Wildbad. 3. making requests for immediate financial assistance to the City Council in particularly urgent cases. 4. to order the provision of support in kind as well as food and shelter in asylum for the homeless; to give clothing to poor travellers in transit. 5. advising and supporting the deputation of the poor in asserting claims of the local local arms association for compensation of support against the legally obligated arms associations or private persons; the same applies to the imposition of compulsory labour and the initiation of compulsory education. 6. to participate in the appointment of volunteers to care for the poor. 7. the same applies to the election of the poor doctors. 8. the same applies to the election of the paid poor supervisors. 9. the supervision of the poor in public support, research into the causes of impoverishment and the measures to prevent poverty. In addition, until their unification with the Armenamt on 1 April 1910, the alms-giving service responsible for the accounting and cashier's office of the Ortsarmenverband as well as for the administration of the poor foundations and the municipal eating establishments existed. On April 1, 1913, professional guardianship was introduced, which was established as a collective guardianship. During the First World War, the Office of the Poor was given further tasks by various war welfare institutions and measures. In February 1919 the former poor people's office was renamed the "municipal welfare office". On 7 August of the same year, the municipal council decided to establish the War Welfare Office for War-Damaged Persons and War-Related Persons. The Welfare Department, whose tasks included the granting of subsistence allowances from voluntary contributions to those in need or the forwarding of those in need to the competent authority, was established on 3 February 1921. On 1 April 1925, the administration of the municipal kindergartens was transferred from school administration to the welfare office. On 25 February 1929, an educational counselling centre was set up at the Youth Welfare Office; it was to deal with all educational issues and advise the municipal authorities and the population on educational matters. The Foundation Office was re-established as an independent office on 1 October 1929. A major change in the organisation of social welfare took place in 1933 when, on 1 May of the same year, the Welfare and Welfare Office was united under the name "Wohlfahrtsamt". The new Office was initially divided into the following business areas: - General welfare work (since then welfare office) - youth welfare office - war welfare - small pensioner welfare - social pensioner welfare Already in December of the same year a new division of the business circles took place: - General Administration (with Foundation Office) - Family Welfare - Welfare Office for War-Damaged Persons and Survivors - Youth Welfare Office On 1 February 1935, the municipal labour welfare service was transferred to the Welfare Office. The Welfare Office received a further increase in tasks by taking over the administration of the welfare institutions on 1 April 1939 and by setting up a department for family maintenance in September of the same year. After the end of the Second World War, with the establishment of the Social Welfare Office, welfare work was again reorganised. This newly established office got the following departments: 1. welfare office 2. youth welfare office 3. foundation office 4. office for immediate assistance (became independent on 1 September 1952 as a compensation office) On 2 February 1949 the refugee office, which had since belonged to the economic department, was integrated into the social welfare office as the fifth department, while the youth welfare office was separated from the social welfare office in 1962 and continued as an independent office. The files recorded here were handed over to the City Archives by the Social Welfare Office between 1983 and 1988, with the fact files being taken over in their entirety. Since it was not possible to take over all the individual files offered, only the files of those persons whose surnames begin with the letter "G" were kept here. The following aspects had an aggravating effect on the order and distortion of the inventory: 1. the frequent and numerous changes in the organisation of the offices 2. several changes in the file plan (e.g. files with different contents had the same file number) 3. files which were created in the welfare office before 1924 and later continued at the welfare office received a new four-digit file number, while files which were not continued retained their old file number. The long duration of the files (from 1748 to 1985) also made it difficult to put all the files in order, although the files which arose after 1945 were mostly individual files (social assistance, tuberculosis aid, etc.). As already mentioned above, the majority of the holdings contain files from the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich, so that the social conditions of this epoch can be traced. Since the inventory was already used before the completion of the indexing work and was already quoted in publications, a concordance is attached to the repertory. Existing individual files (social assistance files, family maintenance files, etc.) are subject to special personal protection and can only be used in exceptional cases with special prior permission. Further files on the history of the poor and social system in Stuttgart are to be found in Depot A, in the holdings of the main file and in the holdings of the Foundation Office. Units summarized in the original Finebook were transferred to Augias if there were more than 10 units (422-679, 1099-1131, 1281-1396, 1513-1524), if there were less than 10 units they were recorded separately. In the course of the Augias input, the stock was partly measured and tufted information replaced by cm information. In March 2015, files from the former "Armenamt", which had been wrongly kept there, were taken from the collection of newspaper clippings and incorporated into the 201/1 Social Welfare Office under the serial number 3116. According to Vermekr, the files were handed over to the archive on August 11, 1949, on the file cover sheet. One unit (No. 3117) was subsequently handed over by the Social Welfare Office in 2015. The photos were handed over to the city archives in August 2001. The shots are two roll films, 12 slides and 50 printing plates, all shots are black and white. The photos show social facilities such as old people's and nursing homes, youth homes and welfare facilities as well as schools in Stuttgart in the 1950s. The printing plates are for the most part each provided with an impression. From these as well as from the glass slides and the roll films, a PE print was subsequently made. Four printing plates are without impressions; according to the current state of knowledge, these cannot be printed any more because the small-format offset printing machines are no longer in use. Use is via the photo prints. The photos with the inventory designation FM 86 were recorded by Vera Dendler in October 2001. A typewritten finding aid was created. In December 2016, this was transferred to the Augias registry program and integrated into the 201/1 Social Welfare Office.

Contents: An overview of the contents can be found in the classification. History of origins: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Theodor Christoph Heinrich Rehbock (*12.04.1864 in Amsterdam, 17.08.1950 in Baden-Baden) studied civil engineering in Munich and Berlin from 1884 to 1890. After the diploma examination and the government building leader examination he worked from 1890 to 1892 in Berlin at the Reichstag building administration, then from 1893 to 1894 in the Bremen building administration. After passing the government building master examination in 1894, he worked in Berlin as a consulting engineer for hydraulic engineering and undertook journeys through Europe, to Canada and the USA as well as to South America and 1896/97 to southern Africa. In 1899 he was appointed full professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, where he established the river engineering laboratory and served as rector in the academic years 1907/08, 1917/18 and 1925/26. In 1934 Rehbock was emeritus. In 1943 Rehbock obtained permission from the rector to bring his papers from the river engineering laboratory to his house in Baden-Baden to arrange them. When Baden-Baden became a military restricted area in the autumn of 1944, Rehbock moved it to his alternative quarters in Ried b. Benediktbeuren/Obb. At the end of the war he took her back to Baden-Baden. Since his house was confiscated by the French military administration, he had to move again - taking his papers with him. After the war, for example, there must have been two folders with the correspondence that Rehbock had kept with the nestor of German hydraulic engineering, Hubert Engels from Dresden, a colleague he held in high esteem. In any case, the effects of war had destroyed not only countless measurement records, plans, etc. but also the historically valuable and extensive collection of site plans of the Rhine models: According to Rehbock, the already print-ready collection documented "the best I could achieve in the experimental world". History of the inventory creator

The North German Mission was founded in Hamburg in 1836 by six missionary associations as one of the oldest German missionary societies. It has been based in Bremen since 1851 and today is a joint work of four German and two African churches. After initial activities in New Zealand and the East Indies, the North German Mission also sent missionaries to West Africa from 1847. The missionary work in West Africa, which has been carried out continuously since then, has resulted in two independent churches: the Evangelical Churches of Togo and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana. In these two countries, the North German Mission still focuses on its missionary and, today, development policy activities. In over 150 years of presence in Africa, the North German Mission has experienced all the ups and downs of German-African relations in its West African mission centers. This includes the pre-colonial presence, the colonial period following the founding of the colony of German Togoland in 1884 and the difficult post-colonial development from the First World War to the present day. Recruited throughout Germany and sent out from the headquarters in Bremen, generations of missionary workers were active in Africa in mission, school and development service and recorded their work in letters, reports, minutes and also photographic documentation. Conversely, African mission workers found their way to Germany early on for training. Over the course of more than 150 years, a unique archive collection has thus been created at the mission headquarters, which has hardly suffered any significant loss of material, even through the numerous political upheavals and military events. It is supplemented by a collection of pictorial documents which, like the written records, date back to the 1840s. A special library was also set up at the Bremen mission headquarters, which was primarily used for internal training purposes of the mission and contains numerous manuscripts and early prints in West African languages - in particular the Ewe language spoken in present-day Togo.
Transfer of the collection to the Bremen State Archives
On November 18, 2005, the archives, image collection and library of the North German Missionary Society were handed over to the Bremen State Archives. The documents, image collection and mission library are now available for research in one place. The archive of the North German Mission is one of the most important archive holdings in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Its value and importance for research was recognized early on. Even during the Second World War, the State Archives took over numerous archival records in order to bring them to safety together with the state archives. In 1968, a contract was concluded under which the collection was transferred to the Bremen State Archives as a deposit (StAB 7,1025). Since then, it has been listed as no. 0503 in the general list of nationally valuable archives in accordance with § 13 para. 2 of the law on the protection of German cultural assets against emigration.

Inventory history

As the North German Mission was forced to part with its collection and library items in 2005 when it moved into a new but smaller mission house in Bremen and was no longer able to provide reading rooms for academic use in the mission house, it felt compelled to take the step of transferring ownership of the entire collection to the Bremen State Archives at the same time as transferring the remaining archive, collection and library items to the State Archives. This was initially done in the certainty that freer access would bring considerable advantages for academic and research use and against the background that archival indexing, especially of the collection and image material as well as the library, could no longer be adequately carried out in the Mission House itself. It was also not possible to ensure optimal long-term storage of the documents in the Mission House. It was agreed at the time of the handover that the collection should continue to receive a steady increase in written and collection material from the North German Mission, which is primarily active in West Africa.
Since 1968, Depositum 7,1025 Norddeutsche Mission has been one of the most frequently requested holdings in the Bremen State Archives for academic - and international - use. Since 2003, it has been used intensively for a research project of the University of Bremen funded by the VW Foundation, in which researchers and doctoral students from Togo and Ghana were also involved under the direction of Dr. Rainer Alsheimer, and the files had already been formed and recorded by an employee of the North German Missionary Society when they were delivered to the archive: In the 1970s and 1980s, Paul Wiegräber had compiled a file index and labeled the file folders with shelfmarks. During this time, larger and smaller amounts of written material were added to the collection several times - materials from older times, but also collection items that had accumulated in cooperation with the churches in Ghana and Togo at the time.
With the takeover of the archive material, the State Archives undertook to restore, pack and index the existing and especially the newly acquired image and library holdings. To this end, after returning from loan to the Transkulturation project in 2004, the archive holdings were systematically reviewed, the existing packaging materials were supplemented and the labeling was renewed. The documents in the collection are often loose; in particular, the sometimes extensive units in which the semi-official correspondence with the mission staff is filed are still very much at risk in terms of their preservation and internal organization.
The archive holdings had already been microfilmed in the 1970s as part of the federal government's back-up filming work; these films were returned to the State Archives after copies had been made and could be used. The subsequent deliveries to the collection will be filmed in 2007 so that user films can be made available for the entire collection. In future, copies will only be made of the films in order to avoid having to make copies of the documents themselves. To this end, the structure was greatly expanded in order to appropriately organize the previously little-noticed documents that were not directly related to the activities of the missionary staff in Africa and Australia. Where available, surviving titles were included in the index. The documents relating to missionary activities in the narrower sense, to which the older indexes were limited, had already been extensively indexed. In addition, the evaluations compiled by various members of the Transkulturation project were available, which were based on the older lists, but also contained descriptive texts, including transcriptions and translations. This information was evaluated for the file index, so that information on the scope and the languages used in the written material is available for this area of the inventory.
The image collection, its acquisition and processing
The North German Missionary Society has used the medium of photography since the 19th century to document its work internally and to present it to the public. The photographs, mostly taken by missionaries as part of their work in the African mission field, were not only kept as memorabilia, but were also used in slide shows for the public and at internal training events, and were often printed in the missionary society's publications.
An extensive stock of photo prints, systematically filed, forms the core of the archive. These photos were indexed in various lists and were often labeled and dated on the back. Another focus of the collection is on the portraits of the mission staff, which were apparently systematically collected and stored from the beginning of the mission's activities and the spread of photography, and the mission staff and various people associated with the mission also created their own collections and added them to the missionary society's photo collection. The collection contains several albums of individual missionaries and the German-Togo Society, as well as slide series from the lecture activities. Only a single album of photo negatives has been preserved. The existing slides are likely to be copies that were made from the recording media or prints. The collection comprises 5,316 individually listed photos, many of which have been handed down several times. They are all black and white photos, a few pieces are colored, two drawings are in color.
As part of the Transculturation project, which was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and carried out under the direction of Dr. Rainer Alsheimer at the University of Bremen between 2003 and 2005, the religious studies scholar Sonja Sawitzki worked intensively with the image collection. She recorded the titles and dates of the photographs, signed and packaged the items and prepared them for reproduction. In particular, notes on duplicate image content were incorporated. The physical condition of the pieces was also described, with the size and state of preservation and any existing defects listed. With regard to the type of image, the editor distinguishes between prints, drawings, prints, postcards and the various film and glass materials, and there are also references to mounts on cardboard or in albums. Many photo prints are not in good condition, heavily faded, soiled or incomplete. The albums and portfolios often contain prints from which no high-quality originals can be obtained. As a rule, however, it was possible to find the originals for the prints elsewhere in the collection.
All existing images are now listed in the index to fonds 7,1025 Fotos. The existing prints and their signature, the repro or surviving negative or slide are listed and the identifier of the corresponding image file is given. As part of the content indexing, the image title and date are given, as well as additional information that Sonja Sawitzki noticed or found useful, that has been handed down with the items or that was filed in connection with indexing approaches by other processors in the past. Particularly important are the references to duplicates that were found in different contexts and identified together. Different titles for such duplicates have been regularly included, as some unlabeled photos could be assigned in this way. Missing titles have been added, preferably on the basis of labeled duplicates; added titles are indicated in square brackets. Images unsuitable for reproduction and items that were already recognized as duplicates during the first round of work have not been reproduced. In these cases, the image content of the duplicate is shown in the index and the image file of the reproduced duplicate is indicated. This applies above all to the photographic prints, which have already been filed systematically by the North German Missionary Society. Other classification features found were derived from the context of the photo albums and slide boxes. Only the items that had not been filed in any particular order were arranged according to a rough chronology, while the undated and unmarked items were grouped according to motifs. There are a large number of duplicates, particularly among the undocumented image originals, which could not be easily assigned to the better documented items due to the large size of the inventory. No evaluation of the file inventory was carried out in the production of the image annotations - numerous photos, especially portraits, could certainly be labeled more precisely on the basis of the file inventory.
The images can be viewed in an online presentation. The image descriptions and formal data are reproduced there, and a preview is intended to give an impression of the image content. The images will only be shown in specially justified cases. All images are available as black and white reproductions on film, unless negatives or slides have survived. Image files are also available for the images, which were created using the existing repros with a resolution of 400 ppi. Reproductions and image data are available from the Bremen State Archives.
The Bremen State Archives also took over the extensive special library of the North German Missionary Society along with the files and photographs. The books in the library are kept in a special section of the State Archives and are indexed as individual works according to standard library procedures. This index lists all titles published by the North German Missionary Society itself or by individual members of its staff. For the other works, the systematic classification is given; the titles can be searched in the library's online reference systems.

The Order of St John, which came into being with the crusade movement at the end of the 11th century, fell victim to secularisation at the beginning of the 19th century, as did all religious institutions. The German Grand Priory in Heitersheim (in the Breisgau region) was dissolved in 1805/6 with its subordinates, including those in the new Grand Duchy of Baden and the Kingdom of Württemberg. The Brandenburg Bailiwick, which since the 14th century enjoyed a special position within the Grand Priorate of Germany strengthened by the conversion to Protestantism around 1540, was not secularised until 1811, but remained in existence in the form of an Order of Merit for persons of Protestant and Russian Orthodox denomination who deserved to serve the Prussian king, the royal house and the monarchy. In 1852 King Friedrich Wilhalm IV of Prussia restored the Ballei Brandenburg of the Order of St. John. The initiative for the revival of the Order and for the foundation of "cooperatives" in the Prussian provinces and in southern Germany also proceeded from it. The development in Württemberg was concluded in June 1858 with the award of corporate law, i.e. the status of a legal entity, to the "Cooperative of Knights of the Bailiwick Brandenburg of the Order of St John of Wuerttemberg in the Kingdom of Württemberg" residing in Stuttgart. It was joined by knights from Baden and - until the foundation of a cooperative society in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1888 - also by Bavarian knights. There was no intention to found a cooperative of its own for Baden several times, so in 1906 the cooperative was renamed "Württembergisch-Badensche Genossenschaft des Johanniterordens". Since 1978 it has been called "Baden-Württembergische Kommende des Johanniterordens". It was originally a legal person by royal Württemberg sovereign act and is now a non-profit registered association of civil law. The Baden-Württemberg Kommende of the Order of St John is subordinated to the Ballei Brandenburg, which is subdivided into a total of 20 cooperatives or Kommende. For the documents received in 1969, there is already a completed find book available which was produced in 1970 by the inspector candidate Renate Pruschek. The since then existing taxes of June 1983, May 1984, August and September 1988, which were made by the Commentator of the Baden-Württembergische Kommende Friedrich Ritter von Molo and by the Hohenlohe-Zentralarchiv Neuenstein, have been combined to a partial stock and are indexed in the present find book. The recording initially took place as part of the training of the archive inspector candidates Corinna Pfisterer, Regina Keyler, Bettina Herrmann under the guidance of archive assessor Dr. Peter Schiffer from July to September 1988. From October 1988 to March 1989, archive inspector Sabine Schnell, among others, made the remaining title recordings and carried out the final work. Since the stock was recorded by several editors, it was not always possible to design the title recordings uniformly. A pre-archival order of the files is not recognizable, therefore the structure of the find book of Pruschek served as basis for the present find book. However, a modification was necessary. In order to avoid overlaps in the order numbers, order number 401 was used for the distortion of the present partial stock. In particular, the inventory contains files on the organisation and administration of the cooperative. Insights into the tasks of the cooperative are rather provided by the publications and journals received, the existing books provide information above all about the general history of the order. Personal documents of the commentators on membership and function in the Order remained in the private estates of the Hohenlohe Central Archives in Neuenstein. The listed documents have a total duration from (1714-1719) 1853 to 1987. Since the stock is property of the Johanniterorden, no cassations were made. The partial stock P 7/2 comprises 293 units with 8.3 m running time. The finding aid was created with the help of data processing on the basis of the MIDOSA program package of the State Archive Administration of Baden-Württemberg.

History of the Inventory Designer: In 1880, the "German Agricultural Council" suggested the creation of a "Reichszentrale zur Beobachtung und Vertilgung der die die Kulturpflanzen schädden Insekten und Pilze" (Reich Centre for the Observation and Eradication of Insects and Fungi Harmful to Cultivated Plants). On 24 March 1897, the Member of Parliament and practical farmer, Dr Dr hc. Albert Schulz-Lupitz in the Reichstag, an initiative for the creation of an "agricultural-technical Reichsanstalt für Bakteriologie und Phytopathologie". A necessity was given by the annual damages in the agriculture and forestry by diseases and pests of the cultivated plants and because of the importance of certain bacteria. This request was initially postponed until the following year and was finally dealt with again on 28 January 1898. On that day the Imperial Health Office demanded 2400 Marks for a "botanically trained unskilled worker" who would not only carry out the food examinations, but also the botanical work for the pharmacopoeia and the exploitation of plants from the protectorates, as well as be active in the field of plant protection. Finally, on 25 February, a commission met at the "Imperial Health Office" to discuss the planned establishment of a "Biological Department" at the Health Office and to draw up a first memorandum. The integration into this office was carried out because the now projected tasks (e.g. combating phylloxera) had been carried out there for years. The founding memorandum set out the tasks of the future research institute in eight points and became part of the "Law on the Determination of a Supplement to the Reich Budget Budget for the Financial Year 1898". When the "Biological Department for Agriculture and Forestry at the Imperial Health Office" was founded, Oberregierungsrat Dr. med. h. c. Karl Köhler was director of this office. The first head of department was then in 1899 the Privy Councillor Prof. Dr. Albert Bernhard Frank, who died in 1900. History of the inventor: The cruiser squadron formed on 23.01.1897 was initially under the command of the Navy. After its dissolution in 1899, the squadron commander received for his area the powers previously exercised by the commanding admiral. The squadron was destroyed on 08.12.1914 near the Falkland Islands. Description:IntroductionThis collection of newspaper articles and journal articles is named after Joseph Will, a staff member of the "Defwehrstelle" against National Socialist propaganda led by the then cathedral vicar Joseph Teusch. Will, who had been employed at the defensive post since 1935, invested this collection for private purposes. Joseph Will was born on 24 August 1907 in Munich as the son of an editor. He spent his school days in Cologne, where he graduated from the Abendgymnasium in 1929. He then worked as a trainee at the Kölnische Volkszeitung. In addition to his professional training, he was particularly involved in Catholic associations and federations, such as the Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB), the Christian Trade Unions, the Peace Federation of German Catholics, and the Unemployment Assistance Organization. He founded the Windhorstbund Köln-Nord around 1930. From 1933 Joseph Will earned his living with a paper and book agency and continued his activities in the Catholic association work, especially in the Catholic youth associations. In 1933/34, Will was detained for up to four weeks on remand for this mission. During this activity he got to know the then cathedral vicar Joseph Teusch, who called him to the "defensive post" in 1935. Here Will helped to set up an archive to record National Socialist literature. The brochures and pamphlets written in the Teusch defence office were distributed by Will, among others. With a car (passenger car) with trailer he transported the writings and often covered up to 800 km per day. When the war broke out, Will moved to the Vicariate General, later to the archbishop's pastoral office. In October 1943 he was drafted for military service. History of the Inventory Designer: Association founded in Berlin in 1896 by Karl Supf for the economic development of the German colonies through scientific investigations, publications, research trips and propaganda activities; since 1902 officially "Economic Committee of the German Colonial Society". In 1936 probably merged into the Reichskolonialbund. Inventory description: Inventory history The fact that an archive was set up in the Colonial Economic Committee is regarded as a confirmed finding. The Colonial Economic Archive, which was established at the Berlin Central Office in 1909, already had records of more than 600 colonial enterprises in its founding year. Due to a lack of documents, it is not possible to determine when the documents were transferred from these archives or the registries to the Reichsarchiv. For the period of the Second World War it can be assumed that the holdings, together with other holdings of the Reichsarchiv, were outsourced and taken over after 1945 by the Deutsches Zentralarchiv Potsdam (later Zentrales Staatsarchiv Potsdam). Due to the lack of old finding aids, no information can be given on war-related outsourcing losses. Archive evaluation and processing Together with the documents of the D e u t s c h e K o l o n i a l s c h e G e l l l s c h a f t , the holdings of the Kolonialwirtschaftliches Komitee are among the most comprehensive non-governmental records of the colonial movement in the Federal Archives. The first processing of the holdings has already been carried out at the Central State Archives in Potsdam. Usually a simple distortion occurred. The new revision resulted in minor changes to the share titles and the reclassification of the portfolio. Colonial objects ("temporary title")

In the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ordenskunde e.V. there are various collectors of colonial objects. These include individual photos and albums, certificates (award certificates of orders and decorations as well as official letters, reports and contracts), diaries and other objects from the colonies. Among other things, cooperation between the colonial powers also plays a role. There are also private estates of colonial soldiers and inhabitants of the former German colonies.
