The State Archives Nuremberg is the state authority responsible for all questions concerning archives in the administrative district of Middle Franconia. The territories located in the southern part of the Franconian Imperial District and fallen to the Kingdom of Bavaria at the beginning of the 19th century, whose government seats were located in the territory of the administrative district, are assigned to him as historical sprinkles; the 1972 territorial reform is not taken into account here. These are in particular the imperial city Nuremberg, the principality (or Markgraftum) Brandenburg-Ansbach, the high monastery Eichstätt and the largest part of the Ballei Franken of the Teutonic Order. The modern district of Middle Franconia, established in 1837, forms the modern Sprengel in its current extension, changed by the 1972 regional reform. With regard to the records of the notariates since 1862, it encompasses the territory of the Nuremberg Higher Regional Court (Middle Franconia, Upper Palatinate and the Lower Bavarian Local Courts Kelheim and Straubing assigned to the Regensburg Regional Court). It should be pointed out that the central and subordinate authorities of such territories located in today's archive sprinkles, for whose central tradition another archive is responsible, are kept there together with the latter (e.g. the Brandenburg-Bayreuth captains Erlangen and Neustadt a.d. Aisch with subordinate offices in the Bamberg State Archive). The Nuremberg State Archives currently (31 December 2013) comprise around 7.3 million archive units (AE), including around 89,000 deeds, 3,750,000 notarial deeds from 1862 and around 1,500 hand-drawn maps and plans before 1806. The total holdings amount to around 38,200 linear metres (running metres).
