Die Handschriftensammlung enthält vor allem Einzelblätter und Briefe von bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten, die mit Düsseldorf in Verbindung standen. Die Stücke sind zum Teil aus städtischen Akten herausgelöst oder Nachlässen entnommen, zum Teil gesammelt und angekauft. Es überwiegen die Autographen von Künstlern, besonders Malern, die wegen der in Düsseldorf ansässigen Kunstakademie relativ häufig in städtischen Akten erschienen.
