Archival history

The Rothschild Archive was established in 1978 by Victor, 3rd Lord Rothschild. In 1999 the ownership of the Archive was transferred to The Rothschild Archive Trust, an independent body of family members and advisers committed to securing the future of the collection and to developing its use by the academic community. The records of the London firm, N M Rothschild & Sons, and papers of the French bank of M M de Rothschild Fréres form the core of the Archive collections, reflecting the activities of the other Rothschild banks through many series of correspondence and accounts that circulated between them. Records of many of the Rothschild familys activities were maintained by the London and Paris houses, including accounts for the management of their estates and some correspondence. The familys other interests are reflected in the growing collections of personal papers that the Archive has been fortunate enough to attract.
