      Als 1. Ponape-Ausgabe wird eine senkrechte Halbierung der Briefmarke Karolinen MiNr. 9 bezeichnet. Entwertet wurden die Marken mit dem 1. Dienstsiegel ("KAROLINEN" kürzer als "PONAPE"). Im MICHEL-Katalog ist zu dieser Ausgabe folgendes vermerkt: "MiNr. 9 H verdankt ihre Herstellung einem Mangel an 5-Pf-Marken, der nach der Zerstörung des Postamtes durch einen Taifun entstanden war. Briefstücke auf blau oder rot liniertem Papier sind als (vermutlich rückdatierte) Gefälligkeitsabstempelungen anzusehen, ebenso die meisten Karten ohne Ankunftsstempel. Von dieser Ausgabe existieren eine Reihe von Kartenserien (z.B. Lücker-, Farun- oder Schoof-Serie), die nach dem Empfänger benannt sind und meist keinen weiteren Text (mit oder ohne Unterschrift) zeigen."
