Inventory description: Dept. 170/2 estate Georg and Barbara Freed Scope: 819 units of description (= 23 linear metres of archive cartons and 9 linear metres of rolled plans) = add. 32 m Running time: 1792 - 1941 Family and foundation In the course of establishing a foundation to the City of Worms, which was decreed in the will, the Worms architect Georg Ludwig Freed (1858-1936) and his sister Barbara (Babette 1855-1941) bequeathed documents to the then museum and the municipal cultural institutes, which were taken over by Dr. Illert in 1942 (cf. Der Wormsgau 2, p. 99). Members of the Freed family had been resident in Worms since the beginning of the 19th century as master painters and whitewashers. They already held important positions in bourgeois associations in the pre-March period, including the Schützengesellschaft, the gymnastics community of 1846 Worms and the fire brigade. Both siblings remained unmarried throughout their lives, their sister Anna Maria (1854) was the wife of the museum director and since 1898 city archivist August Weckerling. The material of the 'Stiftung Freed' includes personal letters, postcards and papers, diaries, documents as well as artisan, artistic and family history documents in a large variety (especially about 1850 to 1935), without any documents obviously being collected after the death of the siblings. A large part of the estate is occupied by the actual architect Freed (numerous sketches, drawings, maps, plans, newspapers, etc.), whose temporal focus lies in his Mannheim years between 1889/93 and 1914. In addition, there are association documents from the entire Protestant-national-liberal milieu, including militaria and national teams or academic associations of the TH Darmstadt. In addition to the documents of his father Georg Fr. Freed from the time since approx. 1840, the closed file tradition of the house Wollstr. 28, which has been inhabited since 1800 and bequeathed to the city of Worms in 1941/42 and later sold privately by the latter (house preserved, part of a monument zone) is also relevant. Freed 1794-1845 married with Johanna Friederika Uswald 1798-1823 (daughter of:) Carl Ernst Ußwald from Oelsnitz/Vogtland 1754, from 1796 in Worms, 1818 (= great-grandfather of G. Völcker (1776-1846), was a painter and master draughtsman (family book: no. 87, description Reuter 1968, p. 204 no. 3), three other family books described on p. 212. Elisabeth Margareta Freed, Stiefenkelin of C.E. U.., born 1826 sister: Katharina Anna, 1825-1912 disproportionate stepbrother: Georg Friedrich F., born 1823 Worms (= grandson of C. E. Uswald) learned the painting and whitewashing trade, journeyman years Wiesbaden 1843/44, Dresden 1844, Vienna 1845; in Worms marriage 1851 with Elisabeth Müller (1825-1899), ev, City councillor 1874-1892; 1837-1851 pedigree book (description Reuter 1968 p. 212); died 1896 = father of Georg, Babette and Anna Maria Freed (Anna M. Freed (*1854) married with August Weckerling, who was thus the brother-in-law of the two Freeds, this certainly justified the willingness to donate the collection to the museum run by Weckerling, whose successor Illert acted as executor of the will after Barbara's death in 1941), Son of the pensioner, master whitewasher and town councillor Georg Friedrich Freed (1823-1896, married to Elisabeth Freed née. Preface : The estate of Fritz Thomée was transferred to the care of the Kreisarchiv in 1982, long after the death of the heir, on the initiative of the then archive director Dr. Rolf Dieter Kohl. In spite of two highly regarded exhibitions about Landrat Thomée in 1986 and 1994, which were taken from the extensive estate, there was no distortion. This task did not begin until the course of 2006 and was completed in October 2007. From about 50 archive cartons with rough presorting, 406 archive units in 34 cartons could be formed by order and compression, but also by separating the extensive library holdings, which were transferred into the holdings of the Landeskundliche Bibliothek. The tradition dates mainly from the first half of the 20th century, the oldest dating from 1727, the most recent from 1962. This shows that documents from the Thomées family archive and from the estate of the son Fritz Thomée jun. have crept into the estate. The focus is on personal documents such as photo albums, diplomas, award certificates, orders and decorations, but also on extensive documentation on the preservation of the homeland, correspondence with art dealers and official documents. In addition, the collection of field mail letters, most of which originated in World War I, deserves special attention. The indexing was done by Gabriele Aschöwer, wife of the district archives office. Thomée Fritz Thomée was born on 24 July 1862 in Werdohl as the fourth of seven children of the factory owner and commercial councillor Heinrich Thomée and his wife Henriette, née Thomée. The parents came from a family of merchants and craftsmen originally living in Iserlohn. After graduating from high school and studying law in Bonn, Göttingen, Leipzig and Tübingen with a doctorate, Thomée entered the higher administrative service with the passing of the assessor's examination in 1893. Temporarily since the beginning of 1894 he supported the sick district administrator Ulrich Nauck at the district office of the district Iserlohn before he changed to the government in Arnsberg in 1896. In 1901 he was first assigned the administration of the Landratsamt Altena on a provisional basis, and on 2 February 1902 he was finally appointed Landratsat. In the course of his subsequent busy activities, dams were built, traffic routes improved, agriculture and forestry promoted and the district's own welfare system expanded. However, his name is also inseparably linked to the construction of a new district house, which was necessary due to the growing tasks, but above all to the reconstruction of Altena Castle. In 1906 he married his long-time love Lily Herbers, daughter of the commercial councillor Heinrich Herbers from Iserlohn. The couple remained united in love and happiness until their death in December 1944, at a short distance. Three children - Hans, Fritz and Margret - sprang from the harmonious connection. In September 1927, District Administrator Thomée retired under numerous honours such as the award of the honorary citizenship letter of his home town Werdohl, but until his death in 1944, he was to remain committed to the preservation of his homeland as chairman of the Märkischer Burgverein, which he had founded, and of the Verein für Orts- und Heimatkunde in Süderlande. His last "trick" was the successful transfer of Altena Castle and its collections to the possession of the Altena district in 1942.

History of the authorities: The organisational rescript of the 26. In November 1809, the Grand Duchy of Baden was divided into ten districts named after mountains and rivers, with so-called district directorates as administrative authorities, following the example of France. Inventory history: In the course of the inventory exchange from the General State Archive Karlsruhe in the years 2000 and 2002, the State Archive Freiburg received a total of 75.60 linear metres of files in four deliveries, which had previously been integrated into pertinence inventories there. Since August 1, 2002, Bettina Fürderer, a doctoral student, has been working part-time under the supervision of an archivist and has started to create provenance-compliant holdings for the files of accesses 2000/68, 2002/50 and 2002/57. The files of the first access 2000/40 had already been processed at an earlier point in time. Since the end of 2007 the work begun by Bettina Fürderer has been continued by the undersigned. Order and distortion work: The structure of the general records was largely based on the pre-Fackler registry order from the 19th century. In addition to files without a local reference, general files also include files that have been created for one subject for several municipalities or that concern an entire administrative district (example: district medical office in the administrative district of Lörrach). The local files were structured according to the Baden official registration order of 1905 by H. Fackler (see below), but without the Roman and Arabic numerals used there, whereby the subdivision planned for individual main points was almost always dispensed with due to the small number of file books. The municipalities are listed alphabetically. For each municipality, the respective district is indicated, according to today's status, abbreviated with the identification letters of the motor vehicles, and for municipalities that are no longer independent today, the name of the new municipality is also indicated. The person index contains the names of natural persons as well as the names of professional and lordships, and in the case of files with up to ten sheets of paper, the number of sheets was always mentioned. In the case of files with more than ten sheets of paper, "1 fascicle" (fasc.) was initially indicated as the circumference; in a later phase of distortion, it was then indicated in centimetres (cm).
